Enel Green Power has signed a power purchase agreement with Empresa Electrica de Guatemala S.A. (EEGSA) to supply 42 GWh of energy per year for five years from two of its hydroelectric plants.
EEGSA is the electricity distributor of the departments of Guatemala, Sacatepéquez and Escuintla. The company provides service to more than 1.3 million customers.
EEGSA will purchase the energy delivered to the grid by EGP’s Matanzas and San Isidro hydro plants, both located in the Baja Verapaz department and providing a total capacity of 16 MW.
The renewable energy provided in the five years covered by the supply agreement will avoid the emission of 144,000 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, EGP says.
“This agreement confirms EGP as a leading renewable energy partner for large corporate customers, while supporting their embrace of the energy transition and supplying sustainable energy to Guatemalans,” said Jose Sanchez, country manager of Enel Green Power in Guatemala. “We are committed to further contributing to the renewable development of the Country, leveraging on our technological know-how as well as the sustainable approach we have implemented at a global level.”
The PPA is the result of a public tender held in February 2020.
EGP says it now provides 5% of Guatemala’s total power generation, with a total of 164 GW of capacity in the country through its 87-MW Palo Viejo, 47-MW Canada, 13-MW Montecristo and 16-MW Matanzas-San Isidro hydro plants. EGP also says an agreement is “on the way” to supply 1.2 TW of renewable energy for 10 years with Aceros de Guatemala, also from its hydroelectric power stations.
