India-based hydropower generation company NHPC is set to commission the 240-MW Uri-II hydropower project in Jammu & Kashmir by May 2013.
The hydropower project, located in Uri tehsil of Baramulla district, was initially scheduled to begin in September 2009 after it secured approval in 2005.
However, the company claimed that the poor geology and uncertain political scenario has delayed the project by nearly four year, reported Hydroworld.com.
NHPC, meanwhile, estimated total cost of the project at INR17.24bn and it is expected to produce 1,123.76 million units of energy through its 4 units of 60MW each.
Earlier in 2012, the commissioning of the project was halted by locals demanding jobs in NHPC, citing the terms of the Memorandum of Undesrtanding further delaying the project.
