It is worth noting that in a record-breaking beginning to 2024, renewable energy went ahead and supplied 58.4% of the overall electricity that was generated in Germany in Q1, which happened to be the highest percentage ever since the tracking started in 2018. The fact is that Germany went on to generate a massive 121.5 billion kWH from renewables which was an increase of almost 12% from 2023. The output, meanwhile, from the sources of fossil fuel power went down by 25%, thereby making only 41.6% of the country’s overall production of electricity.
Apparently, wind power went on to make a significant contribution by way of generating another 5 billion kWH, which was up 12% from 2023 and thereby now accounts for around 38% of the nation’s electricity.
It is well to be noted that solar power went on to see prominent growth, growing by 1.4 billion kWH, or 21%, and offering 6.6% of electricity in Germany.
According to Trade and Invest Director of Energy, Building, and Environmental Technology, Thomas Grigoleit, never before has so much energy that’s renewably been generated been produced as well as fed into the grid in Germany. Around 60% of climate friendly electricity goes on to show that wind and solar capacity expansion bear fruit, and the country is indeed on its way to climate neutrality.
Interestingly, Germany looks forward to decreasing its greenhouse gas emissions by around 65% by 2030 as compared to 1990 levels. The country, apparently, aims to set up interim objectives so as to slash emissions by 88% by 2040 and, at the same time, achieve net zero by 2045.
