Swedish renewable project developer OX2 has applied for permission to develop the 5.5GW Aurora Offshore Wind Farm in the Swedish Exclusive Economic Zone.

The company applied for a Natura 200 permit with the County Administrative Board of Gotland. Located 20km south of Gotland and 30km east of Öland, the proposed offshore wind facility will feature up to 370 turbines.

The wind farm will have the capacity to generate a total of 24TWh of clean energy a year. It will generate enough clean energy to power five million households while displacing 14 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year.

The permit application filed by OX2 also includes an environmental impact assessment for the project. OX2 Sweden country manager Hillevi Priscar said: “It is great that we now have handed in an application for another offshore wind farm.

“Our projects make up a considerable share of the road to reaching Sweden’s climate goals. “They will also contribute substantially to the region’s ability to develop the community, businesses and industries.”

Aurora is part of OX2’s Swedish project development portfolio, which had a total capacity of 11.3GW as of the third quarter of this fiscal year.

Last month, OX2 filed an application to develop the 1.8GW Triton wind farm. The wind farm will be developed at a site offshore from Skåne in the south of Sweden, 30km south of Ystad.

It will feature up to 129 turbines and have a maximum height of 370m. The wind project will have the capacity to generate around 7.5TWh of clean energy a year, which is enough to power 1.5 million households.

It will also have the potential to displace 4.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions a year when fully operational. The company filed the application under the act of Sweden’s Exclusive Economic Zone.
