As per the recent statistics rolled out by the UK government, the country’s wind farm hit a new record in 2022 when it came to annual electricity generation. The figures that have been published by the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero go on to reveal that wind energy generated 24.6%, i.e., 80.2 TWh, of the electricity in the country in 2022, the highest ever, which was an increase of 21%, i.e., 64.7 TWh, that was witnessed a year before that.
It is well to note that Offshore Wind went on to provide a record 13.8%, i.e., 45 TWh of electricity in 2022, vis-Ã -vis 11.5%, or 35.5 TWh, that was offered in 2021.
When it came to onshore wind, it provided a historic 35.1 TWh annually, adding 10.8% to the UK’s power.
The surge in onshore wind generation was pushed by the addition of 3193 MW of fresh turbine power across British waters in 2022, whereas only 318 MW of new onshore wind happened to get added because of barriers in planning.
In terms of renewables, the overall production happened to be 41.4%, i.e., 134.8 TWh of the electricity in the UK, whereas low-carbon sources added 56%. Ana Musat, the RenewableUK Executive Director of policy opined that these record-breaking data put forth the fact that wind is indeed playing a leadership role when it comes to the modern clean energy mix in Britain, thereby keeping businesses as well as homes lit up using unparalleled natural sources.
Ana went on to add that wind is the cheapest of all the sources of power and that every unit of electricity that is generated from it ensures that one less unit of fossil fuel is burned. Wind, in every sense possible, holds the key to cutting human dependence on haywire imported gas that’s expensive and reducing energy bills.
However, the global competition when it comes to renewable investment happens to be intense, and that’s the reason they are urging the authorities to make Britain one of the most attractive nations as far as developing new clean energy projects is concerned, added Ana.
This will help them to offer great amount of jobs as well as get billions in investments, and of course, ensure that things move at a rapid pace towards attaining climate change targets.
